Department of Philosophy and History of Sciences

Our department deals generally with  problems concerning the evolution of life and its interpretation (mathematical, genetic, philosophical), the philosophy of life, the history and philosophy of biology, and similar boundary areas. We also deal with the origins of ancient Greek and Modern science, the philosophical basis of knowledge and the nature of truth, history of natural sciences, shapes and mimesis in living nature, biological similarities, morphogenesis of bacterial colonies, informational processes in living systems and the complexity of living systems.

Studies at the Faculty of Sciences are intended primarily to prepare students for a professional career and teaching (at high schools) in biology, chemistry, geography, geology and environmental science. They are divided into three cycles:

Pre-graduate study

Post-graduate study

The faculty offers study programs in the Czech and English languages. We aim to attract highly motivated and talented students from around the world who wish to study abroad. The international students receive the same education as the Czech students, who are selected according to a high standard. Winter and summer semesters last for at least 13 weeks, with examination periods in between them; the students are obliged to pass up to five examinations after each semester. The main holidays are in August. The students are enrolled in September.
