Here, we reported first diel variations in dissolved concentrations of Mo in a stream. This phenomenon has been found in the As-rich stream at Mokrsko (Central Czech Rep.). Dissolved As, Mo, and Sb diel cycles were linked to temperature-dependend adsorption. Drahota P., Nováková B., Matoušek T., Mihaljevič M., Rohovec J., Filippi M. In the December issue of Astrobiology, the "rapid communication" by Petr Vítek et al. reported about Raman spectroscopic identifications of microbial biomarkers in halite crusts from Atacama Desert using portable Raman systems. And we had a cover page!

Martina Vítková and Vojtěch Ettler together with colleagues from DHI and DTU published first leaching data on the leaching behaviour of Co-smelter fly ash from Zambia. The leaching was supported by ORCHESTRA geochemical modeling and investigation of newly formed phases. Simulations indicated that laterite and carbonate amendments would be suitable local solution for the chemical stabilization of this fly ash. Vítková M., Hyks J., Ettler V., Astrup T. (2013): Stability and leaching of cobalt smelter fly ash. Applied Geochemistry 29, 117-125. (doi: 10.1016/j.apgeochem.2012.11.003)

Together with our colleagues from Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, we recently published a review on chemical stabilization of metal-/metalloid-polluted soils using oxides (mostly Fe-, Mn- and Al-oxides). Read this contribution in the January issue of Environmental Pollution. Komárek M., Vaněk A., Ettler V. (2013): Chemical stabilization of metals and arsenic in contaminated soils using oxides - A review. Environmental Pollution 172, 9-22. (10.1016/j.envpol.2012.07.045)

On January, 31, 2013, Martina Vítková defended her PhD thesis on "Environmental characteristics of mineral waste from metallurgy (copper-cobalt smelting in the Zambian Copperbelt)", which was supervised by Vojtěch Ettler (second from the left). Congratulations! The reviewers were Prof. Jean-Claude Bollinger (Université de Limoges, France; first from the left) and Dr. Joris J. Dijkstra (ECN Petten, the Netherlands; first from the right).
