Sizeable regions of northern Bohemia are built by late Cretaceaous (mainly Turonian) acidic sandstones. These sandstones are water-permeable and tend to support landscapes with very strong geomorphological gradients (deep gorges, different kinds of rocky formations) and fast vegetation dynamics due to high erosion and sedimentation rates (patch succession). They also support many (small and large) peat bogs that can provide information on secular vegetation changes.
I am really interested to communicate with people who study similar kinds of landscapes, anywhere in the world! See my publications: sand1, sand2 and a conference talk here.
Institute of Botany and České výcarsko National Park Administration organized a conference on geology, ecology and history of sandstone regions in September 2002. More information on teh conference is here.
An informal multidisciplinary working group on sandstones established at the 2002 conference (mainly owing to efforts of Handrij Härtel); website of the working group is www.sandstones.org.
Next conference will be organized in May 2005 in Luxembourg.
