Compared to the previous three years, when the number of evaluated papers ranged from seventeen to twenty, this was a quantitative decrease. However, there was no shortage of high-quality works published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"http:\/\/web.natur.cuni.cz\/ecology\/cenavj\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-s2.0-S0048969722004697-gr2_lrg-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5737\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.natur.cuni.cz\/ecology\/cenavj\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-s2.0-S0048969722004697-gr2_lrg-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/web.natur.cuni.cz\/ecology\/cenavj\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-s2.0-S0048969722004697-gr2_lrg-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.natur.cuni.cz\/ecology\/cenavj\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-s2.0-S0048969722004697-gr2_lrg-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.natur.cuni.cz\/ecology\/cenavj\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-s2.0-S0048969722004697-gr2_lrg-1536x1021.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/web.natur.cuni.cz\/ecology\/cenavj\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-s2.0-S0048969722004697-gr2_lrg.jpg 1719w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The papers\u2019 first authors (two thirds of whom were women this year) were affiliated to four universities. Four papers came from Charles University, three from Masaryk University, three from the University of South Bohemia in \u010cesk\u00e9 Bud\u011bjovice, and one from the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague. As usual, the results were often published under the joint affiliation of a university and one of the institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences \u2013 in this year&#8217;s competition, this was the case for almost half of the papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there were fewer papers submitted, the reviewers (representatives of the Czech Society for Ecology and the Department of Ecology, Faculty of Science, Charles University) still had a difficult task: to choose which three papers they felt stood out from the crowd. The fact that nine of the eleven publications were shortlisted by at least one of the reviewers, and that the order of the top three was not decided until the very end of the review process, indicates that most of the publications were of a high standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winning paper of the Vojt\u011bch Jaro\u0161\u00edk Award for 2022 is the bryological study by&nbsp;<strong>Mat\u011bj Man<\/strong>&nbsp;from the Department of Botany of the Faculty of Science, Charles University, and the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic &#8222;<em>Can high-resolution topography and forest canopy structure substitute microclimate measurements? Bryophytes say no.<\/em>\u201d published in the journal&nbsp;<em>Science of the Total Environment<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two other publications share second to third place. The first is another bryologically-oriented study by&nbsp;<strong>Patr\u00edcia Singh<\/strong>from the Institute of Botany and Zoology of Masaryk University in Brno &#8222;<em>Can Sphagnum removal reverse the undesired succession of rich fens under different alkalinity and fertility levels?<\/em>&#8220; from the journal&nbsp;<em>Ecological Applications<\/em>. The second is the paper by&nbsp;<strong>Pavel Karel Byst\u0159ick\u00fd&nbsp;<\/strong>from the Department of Ecology, Faculty of Science, Charles University, which focused on small benthic crustaceans and was published under the title &#8222;<em>Distribution patterns at different spatial scales reveal reproductive isolation and frequent syntopy among divergent lineages of an amphipod species complex in the Western Carpathian streams<\/em>&#8220; in the journal&nbsp;<em>Limnology and Oceanography<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors of these three best-rated papers will be invited to present their results at the next conference of the Czech Society for Ecology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the tenth \u201canniversary\u201d round of Vojt\u011bch Jaro\u0161\u00edk Award, it will be possible to nominate high-quality first-author papers of students and recent graduates published in their final form in 2023 until the end of April 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Vojt\u011bch Jaro\u0161\u00edk Award for 2022: Best-ranking papers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Man M.<\/strong>, Wild J., Macek M., Kopeck\u00fd M.
