PULCHRA – Science in the City: Building Participatory Urban Learning Community Hubs through Research and Activation

Goal: PULCHRA is an EU funded project with partners from ten nations. It encourages and supports students in urban schools to investigate environmental and sustainability issues in their localities with a focus on the topic “Cities as urban ecosystems”.

The project has identified several common issues/opportunities that European cities face due to increased urbanization. These are environmental, social and economic in nature.

In response the project partners designed specific ‘challenges’ for participating schools to explore. These will:

  • build good scientific knowledge;
  • promote expert and community participation;
  • and encourage active engagement in shared living environments and futures.

Framework Partnership Agreement on Copernicus User Uptake (FPCUP)

Goal:

The primary objective of the FPCUP-project is to increase the number of Copernicus users and applications derived from Copernicus based on user requirements. Furthermore, the project aims at expanding the existing markets and creating new markets and competitiveness of European Earth Observation downstream operators.

General objectives:

  1. promote the use of earth observation in applications and services;
  2. foster the development of a competitive European space and service industry and maximise the opportunities for European enterprises to develop and provide innovative Earth observation systems and services;
  3. strengthen the European autonomous access to environmental knowledge and key technologies for Earth observation and geo-information service and thereby enable Europe to achieve independent decision-making and action.

Ensuring sustainable landscape management in selected areas of Ethiopia based on geoscientific mapping

Goal: Specific geological and climatic conditions of the East African Rift significantly influence economic and sociodemographic development of southern Ethiopia. The agriculture in the region is vulnerable due to unstable geological bedrock, climate and excessive and improper use of natural resources. A detailed knowledge of geologic environment – especially lithological fill, geologic structure, hydrological proportions, chemical composition of various soil types or geological risks – is fundamental precondition for successful and financially effective interventions in the problematic areas. The project will consist of two phases. First phase, which has already begun, is focused on geoscientific mapping, analysis of trends in the land cover and land use development and creation of three geoscientific maps at a scale of 1:100 000 for each concerned region (Gedeo, Sidama, Gambela, Oromia). The second phase will consist of the zoning and landscape plans preparation and appropriate measures for ensuring sustainable landscape management will be recommended..

EO4Edu

Goal: EO4Edu will develop resources and provide training for teachers, first and foremost, enabling them to develop lessons within existing curricula that involve all of the components of this project. Training courses will also be developed for instructors in non-school institutions, and students and pupils. The components of EO4Edu include the principles of remote sensing, geospatial science, global citizenship and satellite Earth Observation (EO).
