Social deprivation in urban environment: objective and subjective dimensions

Aim of project

From the most general point of view, the project studies spatial dimensions of social deprivation. Social problems tend to concentrate in rather small areas of cities forming multiply deprived neighbourhoods where disadvantaged individuals and communities live. Therefore, the area-based approach to the analysis of urban deprivation became indeed useful and accepted research approach in the study of social deprivation. The project aims to analyze the social deprivation in urban environment (Prague metropolitan areas) combining objective and subjective perspective.

Research objectives

The major objective of the project is to measure and evaluate social deprivation in urban environment combining objective and subjective perspective.

Firstly, it identifies various forms of socially deprived areas in Prague metropolitan region based on the statistical analysis of social and physical environment and the expertise of key actors in urban social development.

Secondly, the project explores the relationship between people and their everyday residential environment in selected deprived areas combining micro-scale data analyses and residents´ perceptions.

Thanks to the confrontation of objective assessments and subjective perceptions as well as to the construction of Czech index of social deprivation which does not exist yet, the project contributes to the methodological and theoretical advancement in the study of social deprivation.
