Aim of project

The project aims to analyze transformation of physical and social environment in selected neighbourhoods of Prague's inner city after 1990 (after change of the political situation in Central and Eastern Europe) and to discuss the impact of these changes on various social groups.

Research objectives

New political and economic conditions established after 1989 created opportunities for transformation of the inner city which deteriorated during socialism. Although important changes have been taking place in inner city in post-socialist period, it has been relatively omitted in the social research so far. Therefore, this project aims to explore mutual relations and linkages involved in transformation of physical and social environment in selected inner city neighbourhoods of Prague. The objective is to analyze changes in local environments, to discuss processes underlying these changes and to evaluate the impact of physical and social transformation on different social groups. From the methodology point of view, the research relies on various information sources and methods that meet in case studies of several neighbourhoods. The project continues the existing research on transformation of post-socialist Prague and expands the knowledge of Prague's metropolitan region by analyzing the changes and processes that are transforming the inner city and by discussing the consequences of ongoing changes on various social groups.

Specific research objectives

    1. Analysis of changes in social and physical (functional) environment of inner city. Exploration of changes in physical and social environment related to income or outcome of certain groups of people and economic activities to/from selected neighbourhood. Analysis of processes and mechanisms of change in local environments.
    2. Impact of transformations on different social groups. Evaluation of consequences of physical (functional) and social transformation on indigenous inhabitants of the area as well as assessment of the role of newcomers in changing the environment.
