Urban and Regional Laboratory calls for applications for a 4-year fully funded PhD student position in the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development. The succesfull candidates’ work will deal with contemporary changes of social milieu within the post-socialist suburbs. A new paper co-authored by Martin Ouředníček, Jiří Nemeškal, Petra Špačková, Martin Hampl and Jakub Novák was published in Journal of Maps. The paper applies a synthetic approach to the delimitation of metropolitan areas by combining traditional commuting data from the population census with alternative approaches, focussing on the Czech capital city of Prague.

A new book edited by Martin Ouředníček and Jana Jíchová and authored by members of Urban and Regional Laboratory was just published by Academia. Entitled The Social Environment of Prague: A City on the Threshold of the 21st Century, the book focuses on social geography of Prague and deals with topics such as demography, crime, ethnicity and commercial activities.
A new paper on the spatial distribution of foreign citizens in Czechia by Ivana Přidalová and Jiří Hasman was published in the Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish Journal of Geography. The article is an outcome of the Foreigners’ mobility in Czechia and their role in shaping social environment of Czech cities project.
The new Historical Population Atlas of the Czech Lands, edited by Martin Ouředníček, Jana Jíchová and Lucie Pospíšilová, and co-authored by several other members of Urban and Regional Laboratory, was just published by Karolinum Press. The atlas is one of the first to use historical statistical data to evaluate spatial aspects of almost hundred years of population development in Czechia.

Apart from lectures, participants will have the opportunity to join field trips and to carry out an own research project. The course starts on Thursday 23 February, 9 a.m.
New papers by the URRlab team members were published in 2016: Martin Ouředníček discusses the the relevance of “Western” theoretical concepts for post-socialist cities. Lucie Pospíšilová and Jakub Novák introduce mobile phone location data as a new source for research in demography. The paper by Petra Špačková, Nina Dvořáková and Martina Tobrmanová deals with residential satisfaction and intention to move of the new Prague´s suburbanites.
New paper co-authored by Martin Ouředníček and Jiří Nemeškal was just published in Moravian Geographical Reports. The text deals with socioeconomic impacts of Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant on the surrounding municipalities.
