Project 18-14510S is funded by Czech Science Foundation.
Aim of the project
- The main objective of the project is to map the current changes in the social environment of Czech suburbia and to test hypotheses about growing ethnic heterogeneity and return of the part of suburban population back to the core cities.
Project overview
- The project focuses on the changes in the social environment within the hinterlands of Czech cities. First, the project address the scope of suburbanization in the Czech settlement system and changes of social, demographic and ethnic structure of the suburban population over the past fifteen years. The analysis based on statistical evidence of migration pays particular attention to test hypotheses concerning (i) the growing ethnic heterogeneity of suburbs; and (ii) the return of suburban residents back to the core cities (reurbanisation). The project uses own surveys of mayors collected by the research team since 2002 in the suburban municipalities around Prague, which extends with the new round of survey and case studies of four early suburbs of Prague. In addition to investigation of social and ethnic composition, the survey focuses on the attitudes of current mayors to the further development of suburban municipalities. The project aims to present the research result to international audience and to produce comparative analyses within the post-socialist urban studies.
