Welcome to the TAT 2023 website

Trans-Atlantic-Training (TAT) is a series of annual workshops and training courses in Earth Observation (EO), organized since 2013 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and Charles University in Prague, Czechia.

TAT 2023 training: “Remote sensing for environmental monitoring and modelling” (TAT-10) will take place from 27 June to 1 July 2023 in Czechia and will be organized in two cities:

• Prague (27 – 28 June) hosted hosted by Charles University
• and Brno (30 June – 1 July) hosted by Masaryk University.

Goals and objectives

The main objective of the NASA-ESA Trans-Atlantic Training (TAT) initiative is to provide educational activities for students and early career scientists in the field of Earth Observations, with an emphasis on remote sensing of land-cover/use change and ecosystem dynamics. The purpose of TAT is to share and discuss advanced space research methods and technologies through a series of training workshops for early career scientists and students in Eastern/Central Europe.

The topic of TAT 2023 (TAT-10) is “Remote sensing for environmental monitoring and modelling”. Leading experts from Europe and the US will present and discuss state-of-the-art advanced Earth Observation methods. Technologies and data from Copernicus, ESA, and NASA missions will be presented in tutorial lectures and practised in hands-on training sessions. Lectures and training activities will focus on SAR, optical passive and active ( LiDAR) for forestry, agriculture, and hydrology monitoring and modelling, and the use of free and accessible cloud computing and machine learning methods for analysing Earth Observation data. Working with different types of sensor data and their combinations will be demonstrated: SAR data from the Sentinel-1 mission and simulation data from the future NISAR mission, optical (passive) multi-spectral data from the Landsat-8, -9 and Sentinel-2 missions and hyperspectral data from EMIT, DESIS, PRISMA missions, as well as optical active (LiDAR) data from the GEDI mission.

Target group

Participants are expected to be
(a) Early-career scientists and engineers and
(b) Ph.D. and M.Sc. students with advanced skills and research experiences in remote sensing and/or land cover/land use.

Potential participants from Central and Eastern Europe and Baltic States are particularly encouraged to apply. Application is open to nationals of (or those living/working in) all ESA Member States.

• The number of participants is limited.
• The official language of the course is English.
• The participation in the TAT 2023 is free of charge.
• Participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs.
• Participants will use their own laptops.
