I am a geographer working with tree rings. My main scientific interest is in understanding trees and what we can learn from them as long-lasting records of environmental change. I focus on reconstructing climate and extreme hydroclimatic and geomorphological events using various dendrochronological methods, both new and traditional. I work mainly in the mountains and other cold environments (e.g., Carpathians, Himalayas, Scandinavia).

My research focuses on climate change effects on tree growth at arctic and alpine treelines. I use dendrochronological proxies such as tree rings, wood density, and wood anatomy to investigate climate-growth responses at different temporal resolution (annual to sub-weekly). In my current project, I combine wood anatomy/xylogenesis with forward models to better understand how temperature and moisture availability have interacted in limiting tree growth over the past decades.

My primary interests are in tree adaptation to stressful environments and to advance the understanding of how wood anatomical traits influence drought resistance mechanisms, and ultimately survival, and growth. Currently, I study the relationship between quantitative wood anatomy, treeline ecology, and global warming.
