Vojtěch Jarošík Award for 2019

We are pleased to announce the laureates of the 6th Vojtěch Jarošík Award for an excellent student-authored publication in ecology, presented jointly by the Department of Ecology, Faculty of Science, Charles University, and the Czech Society for Ecology.

This year, 20 first-author papers by students were submitted, all published in international peer-reviewed journals in their final form in 2019. This number breaks the record of the relatively short history of the award. However, the quality of the submitted papers has not decreased at all. After the last year’s absence of any submissions from Moravian universities and the dominance of applications from Vojtěch Jarošík’s alma mater, Charles University, this year’s competition was much more diverse. Seven submitted papers from Charles University were equalled by seven from the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, four applications came from Masaryk University in Brno, and one application each came from Palacký University in Olomouc and the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague.

All applications were evaluated by a committee of 10 senior researchers from key Czech ecological institutions nominated by both award organisers. Each evaluator had to make a difficult choice of three best papers based on their originality and contribution to ecological knowledge. The final results were nevertheless clear. Interestingly, the three awarded papers originated in three different institutions.

The Vojtěch Jarošík Award for 2019 comes to Michael Mikát, a doctoral student from the Department of Zoology, Charles University, for his PNAS study entitled “Polyandrous bee provides extended offspring care biparentally as an alternative to monandry based eusociality”. Interestingly, five out of seven co-authors of the study are still students who helped with the project (some of them already during their high-school studies). On the second place ranked Daniel Souto-Vilarós, an alumnus of the University of South Bohemia and the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, with his Molecular Ecology publication entitled “Faster speciation of fig-wasps than their host figs leads to decoupled speciation dynamics: snapshots across the speciation continuum“. The third place belongs to Lenka Harmáčková from Palacký University for her Journal of Animal Ecology paper entitled “Specialization and niche overlap across spatial scales: Revealing ecological factors shaping species richness and coexistence in Australian songbirds“. All awardees will be invited to present their work at the next conference of the Czech Society for Ecology.

From the submitted studies, it is apparent that many doctoral students of Czech universities are able to produce excellent research publishable in the highest-ranking journals. Let’s hope this will be confirmed in the next years.
