New paper

We have a new paper out in Ecosystems led by PhD student Jirka Mašek: our combined dendrochronological and remote sensing analysis for two dominant tree species in Central Europe suggests that the response of tree canopy and stem growth to climate might be decoupled, also depending on species and local topography.

DAAD internship offer

For Bachelor students enrolled at a German university, we offer a paid internship in summer 2023 through the German Academic Exchange Service – DAAD, to work with tree rings and wood anatomy. Applications are possible until December 15, 2022, through the DAAD RISE worldwide portal. In the DAAD portal our offer is listed under the […]

New group members

We warmly welcome two new group members: Francesco Marotta, new PhD student from October, will study intra-annual growth responses of trees at the treeline to climate using wood anatomy and modeling as part of the GACR treeline project. Eunice Romero, new postdoc from November, will investigate drought resistance in wood anatomical features of seedlings at […]

New paper in Global Change Biology

A new paper led by Jan Tumajer and involving many other colleagues from Prague (Charles University, Czech University of Life Sciences, Czech Academy of Sciences) has been published in Global Change Biology. In this study, linear and nonlinear climate-growth models for spruce and pine stands across Central Europe were compared in order to identify the […]

Video tutorial on Blue Intensity

Ryszard Kacka and colleagues have published a video tutorial on the measurement of blue intensity (BI) – a parameter that represents ring density. BI is increasingly used in dendro-sciences due to its relatively simple measurement technique and its cost-effectiveness. For more information about BI and its measurement, check out the accompanying article published in Dendrochronologia.

Sampling in the Alps

In late September, we carried out another field campaign as part of our GACR treeline project. We spent an intense week in the Karwendel, Austria, and Val di Mazia, Italy, sampling Stone pine and European Larch at treelines. A big thank you to the team who made the best of the challenging conditions and worked […]

Fieldwork in Canada

Almost three weeks of fieldwork in Canada are over. Together with colleagues from the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences and J.E. Purkyně University, we sampled trees, seedlings, and shrubs at Mont Jauffret and Mont Babel treelines in the region of Uapishka, Northern Quebec. It was great to be back in remote regions […]

BSc/MSc thesis offer with fieldwork

We are offering a short-term position as field assistant (19.-25.09.2022, expenses covered) for B.Sc/M.Sc. candidates – already enrolled at Charles Uni – who plan to write their thesis within the related research project on climate change effects at treelines. Find the advertisement here.

Field campaign in Scandinavia

The core team of the new GACR treeline project has just returned from its first field campaign: one week of intense dendrochronological sampling in northern Norway and Sweden. The team was supported by the local experts Håkan Grudd (Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, Abisko) and Andreas Kirchhefer (Tromsø), who contributed substantially to the success of this […]

Award for video abstract

Jirka Mašek was awarded one of the two prizes for the best video abstract (short oral poster presentation) at the TRACE conference (Tree rings in Archaeology, Climatology and Ecology) in Erlangen, Germany. The Association for Tree-ring Research awards prizes to the best student presentations in the categories “oral”, “poster”, and recently also “video abstract”. Jirka […]
